🕰️ 06.11.2026 - seis - or a friend, a font and a clock
<< back homeBack in 2024, I was doing some small fun projects with Marieke, one of them weft - a custom UI in rust for a spaceship.
Another project that spun from her idea for a custom font was seis. She made a post about it back then.
The idea for the font was that each symbol would have six segments, each segment would have horizontal, vertical and arched lines. Then we would have a binary flag for every line of every symbol - so empty one would be 0000 0000 and a full one would be 1111 1111.
Below is an example of chonky bois - a set of numbers defined in the seis font system.

I have made an editor so that one can create a whole font. Below a set Glagotic script in seis, you can see the binary representation for one glyph at the top right.

The next big step was to use this font for something real and then I came up with an idea for a electronic clock. Now, that would require a display and a controller. It was pretty easy to start with badger 2040 from pimoroni.

Then I just needed to write a python script to draw the numbers with the seis font, specifically chonky bois. I have added the text below as a cherry on top.

Then my colleague from work, Marco, has helped me 3d print a stand for the clock and the project was ready.
The end result with a control panel inspired by Star Trek.
